Arthur “Pop” Momand (1887-1987) was most well-known for his wonderful comic strip, Keeping Up with the Joneses, which began in 1913 and continued to 1938. Many folks consider Momand’s work to be sort of a riff on DeBeck’s Barney Google, but Momand’s strip pre-dates DeBeck’s by six years. Momand’s drawing style was both clean and lively with a wonderful understanding of how figures move. His linework was always solid, and it’s not difficult to see the comparisons between his work and DeBeck’s. Plus, the title of the strip added an important phrase to the English vernacular. You don’t see many examples of, Keeping Up with the Joneses anymore, so I’m pleased to be able to offer a wonderful daily strip from October 19, 1929. Aloysius thinks he’s put one over on his wife, wanting to study French with a good-looking teacher, until Clarice lets him know that she intends on taking French lessons as well. The gag is dated by today’s standards, but was pretty much standard fare back in the day. One side note: five days later the world would change, as Black Thursday fell on October 24, 1929, generally considered around the start of the Great Depression.
