We do love Peter de Sève’s work around these parts. He is one of the best artists/illustrators/animators working today. If you don’t know Peter’s work, you may have been sleeping under three Bushmiller rocks. Honestly, I’m not sure that there is an equal to Peter’s work today, whether his incredible animation character designs, or his gorgeous New Yorker covers. He has a brilliant understanding of form and movement, capturing it in volumetric ways, all the while maintaining a light touch. Truly brilliant stuff. In an effort to pare things down in preparation for a likely move, I’m offering up this rare and wonderful color illustration by Peter. This illustration was done as a book cover for "A Treasury of Great American Scandals", written by Michael Farquhar and published in 2003. The printed cover is pictured in the additional images. The piece is beautifully matted and framed, so I apologize for the poor quality of the photograph. Getting a strong photo without glare has proved very difficult, but the illustration is simply incredible! That man can make watercolor, pencil and ink breathe. The depth of character, the richness of color, and the flat-out liveliness of his mark-marking is really something to behold in person. Peter has a way of layering colors in a glaze-like fashion that creates richness upon richness upon richness. That’s what you’ll find in this piece.
