Spectre (Vol 3) Issue 29 Page 01

This is a killer Spectre page. It has everything that makes the Ostrander/Mandrake run so special.

Pages like this are recognizable from across the room. You instantly know the creators. Mandrake’s huge, dark, billowing capes. Faces full of despair — although usually not quite that look of despair on the Spectre’s own face. And, of course, some religious iconography sprinkled in for good measure.

Then you have Ostrander’s script, which probably sent a lot of readers to the library to look up the references. I’ll admit, I had never read East Coker until this issue came out, and I’m still not sure I fully understand it. Then again, sometimes I wonder if Eliot fully understood everything he put to paper.

If nothing else, it sure sounds cool woven into a Spectre story.
