Defenders 151 Pg 3 (ft Moondragon)

Defenders Issue 151 was released October 15, 1985. This page is the second of three sequential pieces I picked up from the issue, and it continues my goal of collecting early artwork tied to characters who later become part of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy. That connection is present here through the mysterious version of Moondragon who appears in the sequence.

This page, however, was chosen first and foremost for its artwork. It was the piece that immediately captured my attention when I initially considered purchasing pages from this issue. I even bought this one on its own before returning later for the others. The composition is extraordinary. The depth created by the railing and fencing, the geometric shadows set against the chaos of the storm, and the powerful silhouette of Moondragon surrounded by rain and reflective water all come together beautifully in the third panel. The second panel adds a dramatic angle and exceptional inking that heightens the sense of a violent storm. The contrast throughout the page is bold and dynamic, reminiscent of artists who excel at heavy shadow work. It delivers everything I look for in comic art.

The mention of Saint adds another narrative thread that connects with me and fits naturally into my gallery.

This penultimate issue sets the stage for the finale of the series. The page presents a powerful atmospheric moment as the Dragon of the Moon rises within the negative space of the storm, its form emerging as a looming threat to the narrative. The composition uses the chaos of wind and rain to frame the creature’s presence, creating a dramatic visual cue that heightens the tension leading into the final issue.
