Garfield is the current world record holder as the most popular comic. Davis' cat is rebellious, misanthropic, refuses to eat cat food, is fond of lasagna, hates exercise and treats his companions with contempt whether they are human (Jon) or animals (the slobbering dog Odie) . His dry humor made him a worldwide success. Perhaps Garfield is that rule subverter that we would all like to be: brusque with those who bore us, harsh with those who feel superior and able to say what we normally wouldn't dare.
