Defenders Issue #151 Pg 4

Defenders Issue 151 was released October 15, 1985. This page is the third of three sequential pieces I acquired from the issue and it delivers yet another standout moment. Interloper takes center stage here and the close-up is exceptional, complete with a brilliant twinkle in his eye that immediately draws attention.

The art team for Defenders 151 produced some remarkable pages and this one is no exception. As with the others in the sequence, the setting features a night ocean scene with rain, storms, and high contrast. What sets this page apart is the starburst effect in Interloper’s eyes. The light emanating from his gaze has been described as cosmic energy, which fits perfectly with my favorite corner of the Marvel universe. It is also an art technique featured prominently on one of my favorite covers of all time, Infinity Gauntlet, and this may be the only page in my collection that showcases it. That connection gives the piece a sense of comfort and familiarity every time I look at it.

The page also highlights Betilakk, known as Interloper, an Earth Eternal from Polaria. His brief appearances in comics often position him as a balancing force against the Dragon of the Moon, and both figures appear here together. Their history ties back to Titan, where Moondragon once linked with the Dragon of the Moon, and to an earlier battle on Earth when Interloper and the Eternals imprisoned it. This confrontation embodies the ongoing struggle between good and evil.

This page page also serves as the fourth and final entry in the night sequence before the story shifts to a new setting. It rounds out a set of three pages that I am genuinely pleased to have added to my collection.
