DescriptionGrail is a term that many say is tossed around too often. Well, this is mine! If you are an Everett fan, I don't know what existing cover could be more desirable. Not that this is saying much as there are only a handful of 100% Everett Sub-Mariner covers extant. This cover features not only a full frontal shot of Sub-Mariner--Everett's creation--but also Venus from his great '50s run- and it is underwater to boot.FYI, I have Bill / CAF to thank for this as the seller found me through CAF and my visible Everett focus! Amazing. Unlike most artists, Everett's work never declined as he got older. This is a true grail.

A battle scene, a true three dimensional water feel, thousands of tiny water bubbles, bondage venus and Bill Everett makes for an astouding once in a lifetime combination. Tremendous congratulations!

I can't imagine discovering a nicer Everett example than this one ... it combines the extraordinary artwork side of things... the lush and amazing rendering ... with the elements that we desire as comics fans (major characters, scarcity, action, it's a published cover from a great period, etc). It's not always that both of these come together in a perfect storm like that. This cover is one of the iconic pieces on CAF that really show off what our nutty hobby is all about! Imperious Rex!

Congrads! I love Bill Everett's beautiful graceful artwork! I remember loving his 70's Sub-Mariner series. as well as all his inking especailly on Kirby's Thor & Hulk. When he passed it was a sad day in the Marvel Bullpen. We lost one of the greats way too soon!

Putting aside the breathtaking composition, Everett's beautiful drawing style, and the excellent spotting of blacks, I don't know what strikes me more, the espression on Venus face, or the luciousnees of her body, and her body pose/language.

Love this cover. The Sub-Mariner was at his best under Everett. I remember how much I loved finding his art in an issue. His undersea scenes were the best. Thanks for sharing it.

I see the word "grail" used an awful lot and most of the time I think it's an overstatement. Here I think it would be woefully inadequate. This is as good as it gets.

Yeah...using "grail" is not cliche' hyperbole in this case. This is historical AND beautiful.

With only 72 issues in this classic Silver Age run, yours is one of the best! Having just picked up a cover of my own from this great series, I know how few and far between the good ones come along!

Why I waited to comment so long on this cover I cannot say, but I marvel (no pun intended) at how, artistically, it straddles the line stylistically between Everett's Golden Age sensibilities and Marvel's Bronze Age dynamism.

Have always been an Everett fan. I loved his figure work. This is a well composed cover, the figures grab you then all of the details come into perspective, the sharks, and then the even smaller things. The sea/ water effect is amazing from the swirls to the seawater crackle. This was a labor of love. Fantastic.

Phenomal piece, absolutely stunning and truly one of the best if not the best Everett work ever. The two characters I have always associated with Bill's work. My kids are too old to trade for this - lol

Even for the best in the business, sometimes all the elements come together in a special way. This is one of those times. An Everett Grail for sure. Venus is so beautiful.
