Layton JSA Pencil Prelim

Here’s the pencil prelim for Bob’s JSA commission. You might notice a couple of minor changes from the inked version. For example he eliminated one of the bi-planes approaching the Spectre. He also changed the position somewhat on Dr. Fate’s feet on this version, he has them touching the Flash’s helmet creating the impression of a smaller helmet. However in the final version he moved the feet a tad, allowing for the elongated helmet favored by Joe Staton and Bob during their All-Star run. It also appears he moved Dr. Mid-Nite just a little bit more into the foreground.
Looking at the prelim I had no idea he would add stars to the background behind Starman but it is just another example of how he thinks of ways to make a commission more dynamic. Also looking at this prelim I had no idea he would add the lines surrounding the Atom image adding to the power of the “atomic” punch.
It is always interesting to see how an artist first approaches a commission and how he actually finishes it. I really can’t say enough good things about the work Bob does and how easy it is to work with him.
