I've been a fan of Marvin Friedman's illustration and biographical drawings for nearly two decades now. I was lucky to meet Marvin in the late 80s, as he was taking down a show of his work at a downtown Philadelphia cafe. We've stayed in touch ever since and I try and visit with him once every few years, when I'm back east. I met with Marvin this week and was very surpised to be gifted with this painting! It's one of Marvin's pieces from Boy's Life, and appeared in the September 1971 issue. It's from the story, "Boy on a Barge", written and illustrated by Marvin, who spent time with a Dutch family in Rotterdam on their houseboat barge. Marvin's use of colors harkens back to the work of his favorite painter, Pierre Bonnard, as does the composition. A wonderful piece by a true mensch.

to me the strong points to this type of style is it's strong design, great draftsmanship and yet it's still evocative.
