At the 2007
Small Press Expo (SPX), I found
Ryan Dunlavey as usual with his
Action Philosphers co-hort,
Fred Van Lente. Last year, Ryan did a sweet M.O.D.O.K. in my Anything Marvel II sketchbook. This year, I asked if he'd be up for something in my "Least Expected" book, but he said he wasn't because someone the day before had been unhappy with a sketch he'd done for them. I don't understand that. I mean, especially since I think he was sketching for free (he was for me!), how can anyone have the nerve to pull crap like that? It's uncool and it's uncalled for. You get what you get and you don't get upset -- you graciously thank them and you appreciate the fact that they were amenable to fulfilling your request (even if you're paying for it) in the first place! Anyway, when I explained to him the theme of the book and showed him some of the hilarious stupidity created already, he said he'd do it. He then turned to Fred and asked what he'd be least expected to draw, and Fred immediately spat out "Vampirella", which Ryan agreed was something he was terribly unlikely to draw! Came out pretty good, don't you think?
