Description

Did you ever walk by a tree, stop and simply marvel at nature's detail? Exactly that happened to us last fall in Salem. While everyone was looking at the gravestones (and they were impressive, too), we were immediately drawn to this one tree. Presiding over the entire graveyard, we began to wonder how many kids, on a dare, had sprinted into the graveyard under the cover of a full moon to touch the tree and rush back out. How many kids actually went so far as to climb the tree and spend a few minutes amongst the fatefully departed?

The vision of the tree remainied with us long after we left the cemetary and although Salem in general had a wonderful, positive vibe to it, we kept coming back to the Burying Point Tree as the representative image of our trip.

We looked all over Salem for a nice large black and white print of that tree but. inexplicably, none were to be found. So I contacted Dave Gutierrez, who had done two incredible commissions for me already, and we (well, Dave) began the enjoyable process of preserving the tree on paper.

I've said this before in describing my other commissions from Dave, but it bears repeating--he pours so much into each piece. Just look at the detail! Every tombstone is different just like in the cemetary. The swirling winds perfectly capture an October day at dusk in New England and the tree commands the same respect on paper that it did in Salem.
