Description

One of the things that can throw people off when it comes to painting (and, I'm not an expert, but I know it's a problem for me) is white space. It can be daunting and exciting. The technique I use to paint covers the entire paper with a light wash. Then a light pencil figure. Then you lay in your neutral flesh tone. Then your neutral colors around it... then you start blocking in shadows.

If you look at my earlier work, eyes were not clearly defined in color, as much as they were shapes. Mostly out of fear. If you look at most amateur work, the eyes are some of the biggest problems. Having them look real, and defining them as real so they look good with the drawing you've done are two different things. They have to match, or the figure looks too literal and too loose.

So, I figured I'd give eyes their shot. I worked on the face a long time. I got those legs right. That left arm right. I worked the right arm too much and the paper got a bit rough. The payne's grey I used was SO dark and bled a lot when touched with water.

I wanted the background simple, with defining shapes of color, so they didn't compete with the figure. Hair is still a problem for me. I'm always trying to define the light and dark areas, and that just doesn't work with this technique. I should just stick with planes of color. Anyway, here it is. 22 x 15. Not bad.
