Description
Carl Giles (1916-1995) is widely considered to be one of the greatest British cartoonists of the 20th century. While he is most well known for his daily cartoons featuring the "Giles family", especially Grandma, his work during WWII was quite powerful. This piece needs no punch line. It features a train car full of American servicemen, with a stereotypical Englishman riding in the luggage rack. The contour line work in the piece has always struck me. I've never been able to locate where the piece was published. If anyone knows, I'd love to hear about it.

Oh Happy Day! Last week (April 2022) I was contacted out-of-the-blue by a fellow collector, Ian Feachnie, who knew exactly where the cartoon had been printed: Salute magazine, a just post-WWII magazine started by folks from Yank and Stars & Stripes. I quickly found a copy on eBay and it arrived earlier today. The very first feature in the magazine is a two-page spread of Giles' work, titled "As Others Saw Us..." My cartoon is the very last one, but I owned all four on that page at one time.

The caption: LONDON, MIDLAND & SCOTTISH: Is Your Journey Really Necessary? refers to the London, Midland and Scottish railway, which ran from 1923 to 1948, when it became a part of British Railways.

Thanks to Ian, my 35+ year search is over. Huzzah!

Wow - really nice piece. Hard to get a more "British" artist than Giles. Great gallery...

I grew up in the 1950s with a collection of WWII cartoons by Giles, and I don´t think that these have ever been surpassed. Plenty of caricatures of both German and Allied soldiers and this fine illustration brings back fond memories. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! Giles art on CAF? I'm embarrassed I've never thought to look for it here! What a terrific example of his work.

I once attended an exhibition of the artist's works at (of all places) Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery (here in the UK. His colour art is especially wonderful!
