Description
L.B. Cole: Painted cover for "Julius Caesar" by William Shakespeare, Classics Illustrated #68 (Gilberton, May 1960). Image area 14.5" x 21". The first version had line-drawing cover and interior art by Henry C. Kiefer. After only one printing with the new cover, the interior artwork was replaced by Reed Crandall and George Evans. Leonard Brandt Cole (1918-1995) arrived at Gilberton after a stint at St. John Publishing and served as art director from November 1958 to January 1961, succeeding the retired Alex A. Blum. (From the excellent book by William B. Jones, Jr. : Classics Illustrated, A Cultural History, with illustrations).

Dude, thou art a fellow of great respect! These are some wonderful covers and they hold up well. Oh, and thanks for the info (the CI book sounds interesting).

So you were the one who outbid me on this.. and I really wanted it! Well at least I got Robinson Crusoe (it is beautiful with the frame I got for it) What a collection of classics illustrated artwork you have! Did you bid on any of the recent heritage classics illustrated covers? Well... this is probably a slim chance, but is any of you CI art for sale? Thanks [email protected] I think the Cleopatra cover is beautiful. The detail is astonishing and the frame fits perfectly
