This beautiful litho crayon drawing was executed at Chanute Field, in Illinois, circa 1943. Duncan was facile in a variety of materials, and had an assured hand when it came to charcoal and litho crayon. This drawing was published by the public relations office, and is accompanied by the following caption: "
FROM THE TUNISIAN FRONT recently have come reports from war correspondents telling of the miraculous job the men in the repair sections of advanced airdromes are doing in reclaiming and returning to action smashed up fighting planes. Some of these men were welders like Pvt. Max Rice, graduate instructor at the AAF Technical Training Command's Welder School at Chanute Field, ILL. Max has seen action - not at the front - but action all the same. As one of the few survivors of the tragic Boston night club fire, he distinguished himself as a good soldier by returning to rescue others from the blaze after reaching safety himself. He says what he learned about gas defense in the AAF Chemical Warfare course saved his life. He's sore he didn't get to finish his three buck steak."
I hope Max got to enjoy a steak after the war!
