Description

This is the first commission that I've gotten from Joltin' John Lucas, but it won't be my last. We talked about this piece on and off for a while, as he tried to get the right feel for the piece and working process. Once it clicked, it clicked big time.

I love the composition of this piece, with the various angles in the foreground and background. Then come the shadows, executed with lush feathering, wonderful cross-hatching, and an almost stipple-like cross-hatching. To top that off are all of the great textures, from fingerprints to white ink over black.

The piece wound up being a wonderful active piece, which John's animated style being perfect for the subject matter. Some of it reminds me of Roy Crane's work. Some of it reminds me of the work of some of the great old British cartoonist/illustrators. It really is a tremendous piece in person, one that no scan can do justice to. I have posted a fairly large scan here, so that you might be able to get some sense of the textures and atmosphere.
