DescriptionThis one comes with a fun story. I'd made my only pilgrimage down to the SDCC in '94. I wouldn't officially start collecting original art for another 10 years at least.Finding any affordable Hellboy art was already difficult on day 1. Luckily, I came across this page for $75. Now, I'm well versed in Monty Python hagglin' techniques, so I lowballed an offer of $60. The vendor kinda hissed at me, "All day long I'm being asked to sell for lower. Why shouldn't I ask you to buy for higher?!" Being about as sharp as the edge of town, made sense to me! His eyes went sly, "You a gamblin' man?" as I agreed. "You willing to cut for the difference? You lose, you pay $90?" The challenge got me into it, got me juices going and it was on! He rallied some of his "con men" while others gathered around because he wasn't quiet, "Hey, HEY ALL!! We got a player!" Cut to the cut... I lost, and then upchucked a lil' bit in my mouth. All about people roared, some patting me on the back just for the fun of it (which isn't that what conventions are all about anyway?). I slowly pulled out my wallet as the rest of the crowd for me began to turn away all defeated like in Excalibur when Capt. Picard failed to withdraw the sword. My adversary then looked at me all puzzled, "What, yer gonna pay $90?!?" I nodded, we had bet fair an' square and I lost. "No WAY! No one's ever done that before! Tell ya what ... just fer that, it's all yers for $60 bucks, that was great!!" I couldn't agree more ... so we both won! :) Social/Sharing |

Very cool story about a great page, which obviously in the long run, you were the one who won!

What's funny, is that this particular dealer to this day still tells that story! As you were relating it I tried to remember where I'd heard it before, and I recalled that it was from a dealer at his booth while I was thumbing through his wares at SDCC a few years back (don't remember who). Very cool story indeed, and what a great piece for the price!! Easily worth ten times that original amount now.

Wonderfully creepy Hellboy page, but it's your story that takes the cake!
