As a young man, Captain Comet's best friend was his dog Tyrone, named after the movie star. When he left Earth, he took some canine DNA and asked the scientists of Hardcore Station to grow a companion for him. The scientists thought that a low-I.Q. creature would be a poor companion indeed and so Tyrone II was endowed with human-level intelligence. In the book, he assists Comet from their home base - much like Oracle does for Batman.
