Description

Page 2 of a 5-page Mr. A. story called " Middle of the Road " from 1969, which appeared in Graphics Illusions (Summer, 1971). It was later reprinted in The Ditko Collection, Vol. 1 (Fantagraphics 1985), where the spelling errors were corrected. This is the original lettering. Man has to choose between the rational and the irrational. No one can do it for him. The Essential Steve Ditko page. The whole story has been reprinted in Craig Yoe's "The Creativity of Ditko".

This is a recent scan of the original art especially done for Craig Yoe's "The Art of Ditko". Courtesy of Clizia Gussoni who assembled the page from 4 different parts.

It seems like I always look at this one when I visit. I find it fascinating for its symbolic use of stark black and white, even starker philosophy and, especially, the disoriented sense of reality (like one of his better Dr. Strange pages).

Ditko gold! I saw that last panel and could help but see that figure in a Spider-Man costume. This may not be exactly the image I was seeing in my mind, but it's close enough:
