DescriptionThis page features a US Navy Vought OS2U Kingfisher scout/observation seaplane. The crew is carrying out a reconnaissance mission with the radioman/gunner taking photographs of soldiers digging trenches on the beach. The planes were stationed aboard battleships and cruisers during World War II. Launched by shipboard catapults, the pilot would return by landing on the water and recovered by the ship's crane. The planes flew over targets and observed the fall of fire. They carried out searches and rescued downed air crews. I remember one photo with nearly a dozen men hanging onto a Kingfisher near an invasion beach. The pilot taxied his plane on the water to a rendezvous with a submarine which picked up the men.Social/Sharing |
