I believe this piece was done for the cover of a proposed Thunderbird special or mini series. I remember being at some small local con and bumping into the artist who was slated to do either the pencils or inks for the interior pages (I can't recall). For some reason, I want to say it was Gary Martin, but I'm not 100% sure. Also not sure if that happened before or after I acquired this piece, but I do remember him lamenting the fact that the project was scrubbed, as was his only chance to work on an X-book. Like most artists, I can imagine how he thought that getting an X-gig would raise his stock and profile within the hobby and industry. I guess he never got another shot, since I can't even remember who he was from that meeting. For some reason, I'm thinking he had something to do with a Doom Patrol series for DC (and Martin did ink the 1987 series), but again, I can't be sure.

Anyway, more recently, the piece was used as accompanying artwork to the Art Adams interview in COMIC BOOK ARTISTS #17. So at least it was sort of published in a way. And I like the fact that it was featured in something specifically aimed at Art Adams fans. At 15x20, this piece is truly a sight to behold, and then some! My thanks to GL for not outbidding me on ebay! Although I probably could've done without him driving the price up for me! It turned out to be the most expensive Adams piece I had purchased to that point, and actually still is among the most expensive Adams pieces I've ever paid for. Not that I'm complaining mind you. I mean, LOOK AT THIS THING! =)

(2/17/06) Just found out from one of the editors of the new Arthur Adams Modern Masters book, that Arthur himself had suggested using this piece as the cover for the book. Unfortunately, they decided to go with another image for the cover. Oh well, nice to be considered at least.

(5/23/14) Here's some interesting background on this piece. Thanks to my buddy Marcus for finding it. I guess it sheds some new light on my earlier description above.

(7-18-23) Big thanks to Scott Dunbier for this beautiful new hi-res scan. This baby has never looked better (unless you get to see it in person of course).

No one can layout an X-Men cover or splash quite like Art Adams. These drawings with little or no background by him always blow me away. Great piece!

This just became my favorite Art Adams piece after the cover to X Men Heroes For Hope

Certainly not for lack of trying JM. Not sure why the project was scrapped, but I'm sure Arthur had every intention of having this published when he drew it. And of course he came pretty close again when he suggested it for the cover to his volume of Modern Masters. Thank goodness for Bill Cox and the CAF I guess. Since this is the MOST viewed piece in my entire gallery, I suppose enough people have seen it by now. =)

I'd have to agree with you there Michael. But it could've been worse - she could've been done Banshee size! LOL

The editors have no idea what they are doing when they reject a piece like this for publication. This is one of Art's better pieces and that's saying a lot since he's drawn so many beautiful covers. Just awesome. Cheers! N.

Um, I think they should have listened to Art! This one is perfect!

Alas poor Thunderbird, we hardly knew ye. Apparently built to be scrapped shortly after his creation (as he was the second strong guy on a team, and we are all familiar with the unwritten rule that limits it to only one strong guy per team), Thunderbird never looked better than he does right here. In fact, all of the X-men (incidentally this is my favorite incarnation of the team) have rarely looked better than they do right here.

It is beyond criminal that this hasn't been "published," because this piece just blows away so many lesser published covers (including certain published Adams covers). Again, your incredible eye, and your "mutant power" have served you extraordinarily well. Splendiferous felicitations!

Thanks Artemis! Yeah, poor T-bird. Not sure he was (as you say) “built to be scrapped,” but when you consider that he was only in two comics and was killed in the second one, it gives a lot of merit to your suggestion. As far him never having looked better, well, we never really saw that much of him in the first place, so it probably wasn’t that hard to make him look better! LOL! Then again, Arthur does have that “uncanny” knack for plucking these characters from obscurity. Any artist can get your attention by drawing Wolverine, but how many can also do it by drawing long forgotten characters like Morbius, or Deathlok, or Man-bat?

Seriously, great. Words fail me. Congrats for the greatest collection of Adams art I have seen until now (and probably, will ever see!).

This cover evokes the spirit of Arthur's now iconic Classic X-men #1. It's amazing.

I was always a huge Thunderbird fan & Adams is too bad either. Congrads! Marvel should had brought him back a few years or issues later.

Thanks buddy! It took me a lot of years to put all this art together, so I'm very glad when people enjoy it.

I have no idea why I never commented on this before....just so damn awesome. Since classic X-men no.1, Arthur has always done great 'team coming at you' covers. Congrats man!

Thanks Jason! Better late than never. But I knew you'd get around to commenting eventually. From all the great conversations we've had about Mr. Adams, I knew what a big fan you were! So it was just a matter of time. If you're ever in the neighborhood, you have an open invitation to come by and see it in person!
