Description

Miracleman and and the Warpsmith Phon Mooda teleport Earth's supply of nuclear weapons into the sun. The page is made up of a series of xeroxes of photographs and original art, with original art for one of the panels below. The top panel is a photo collage of an image of the UN General Assembly, very similar to the one of Queen Elizabeth's visit shown below. There are several touch-ups on the actual board, in particular, the image of Miracleman and Phon Mooda in front of the UN in the top panel is drawn on the board. In creating pages for Miracleman #16, John Totleben said, "The panels from that sequence were done as penciled drawings on separate pieces of paper, then photocopied to get the dark, grainy look and then pasted up onto the page. I don't remember what became of most of the original pencil art but it's possible they could have been sold with the rest of the bits and pieces from those pages, or even thrown out. The process is actually a somewhat primitive version of the modern "digital inking" approach where super-tight pencils are digitally enhanced in Photoshop to create black line art from the gray pencils. I wanted a different look for some of those pages -- a grainier, semi-tonal look to give it something of a "documentary" feel. I suppose nowadays it would be possible to get that effect more easily with Photoshop filters, but back then it had to be done with either screened photostats or the photocopy approach I used. Also, on the older photocopiers, tonal images would degrade in an interesting way when copies were regenerated several times (copies from copies from copies, etc.) -- the newer machines don't do that quite as well. The copies on those pages are probably third or fourth generation copies to get that particular effect. So it's another one of those weird antiquated things that could probably never be done again in quite the same way thanks to the advances and advantages of modern technology!"

Love this page - issue 16 of Miracleman was full of ideas that could have been mined for years- Great background info as well, Keith.

Miraculous page, and thank you so much for including the excellent explanation from Totleben-- I wish more CAF members would include historical data like this with their postings! PS I think he achieved the effect he was striving for, don't you?

Beautiful piece, just beautiful. Both for the experimental visuals and for the sentiments and story...ah, if only we could do to our political masters what the Warpsmiths do with such breathtaking ease....
