Johnson drew comic strips for other publications, including this Spuddle's Sports Shoppe, which appeared in an unknown sports good trade magazine. Running two retail businesses and drawing multiple comic strips a month led to a good deal of repetition between the strips. The gag in this strip is one that Russ first used in a Mister Oswald comic strip. Even the unnamed salesman is derived from Hottair, the salesman in Mister Oswald.
