Princess Leia- Star Wars Galaxy 6

This is an Artist Return sketch Card from Topps Star Wars Galaxy Series 6.

For those who don't know. As part of our compensation, Topps returns a limited amount of sketch cards to the artists who drew them. We (artists) get a chance to make these returns extra sweet, and may do as we please with them.

I received 4 return cards this time around and here is my first one...

Pretty cool eh. Some of you may remember this style from The Empire Strikes Back 3D set that came out last year.
I really liked how those came out so I wanted to do some more for G6.

These are mixed media pieces of art, where I take my old Star Wars comics, cut out the panels and mount them on to the sketch card for my background. I then draw and paint my art on a seperate piece of Bristol. I carefully cut out the art, and then mount that on sketch card. I sometimes add thought bubbles or caption boxes over the art, which I also cut from the comics. The result is a really cool 3D effect. While they look great scanned, they have a much more dramatic effect when viewed in person.

A big shout out to Al Williamson and Carlos Garzon who illustrated the art in the old Star Wars Comics.
