Description
This page is from Tim Sale's first issue of Deathblow, #3, from early '94. Issues 1 & 2's art was done solely by Jim Lee, then Tim stepped in to do the art duties on the title for a legendary 10 issue run. Although Tim had been in comics for almost 10 years at this point, this was where I first heard of him and was blown away by his style. I loved Frank Miller's Sin City books a lot in the early '90s, and the Deathblow look was a great compliment to the character.
The look and style of the Deathblow title was awesome, and after Jim, Tim was the most prolific artist on Deathblow, for me at least. (Although Trevor Scott is a close 2nd, since he pretty much finished the run on the first series) Especially in the early issues he did, Tim's style was very "Sin City" looking, and this page really captures that for me, so I had to get it when I found it.

See below for the published page in color. Even though the colors are very muted, I always wished that the title would have been published only in B&W, maybe with red only as needed, as coloring the b&w style Frank Miller pioneered seemed to detract from the killer ink look. But the blacks look amazing on this splashy page and the detail on it (especially in the shadows of the blacks) is crazy! How killer is this page!?!

Wow, congrats on this fantastic early deathblow page and such a great example of Tim’s work! Where did u manage to find it? I totally agree with you that this title should have been published in just B&W with red as Tim’s inking is just amazing. Thanks for sharing it with us; I never tire of admiring these pages!

Thanks Tom! I know you're a big fan too! Like so many pieces I get, I was looking into getting one piece and stumbled onto another they had that I wanted more. In this case, a very sweet Sale page that really summed up the style of the book for me. Serendipity is what works best for me in this hobby:)

I remember this run and love his Miller-infused take! Plus he helped the book come out regularly!

Sale's work is incredible. I think the work he did on The Deathblow title is severely under appreciated. Some of his most complex environments and detail work was on that title. Your piece is a great example of that. Congrats on such a beauty!

Tim Sale has so much talent. He's doing Jim Lee, doing Frank Miller. Wonderful page.
