Description
Drawn when he was 24 years old and just breaking into the Comic Art world, this is the earliest known drawing of the Silver Surfer by John Byrne. Byrne’s original work has been noted as being rough, with his drawings emphasizing curves over straight lines. Byrne has himself called the straight line "his least favorite artistic element".

Byrne left college in 1973 without graduating. He broke into comics illustrating a two-page story by writer Al Hewetson for Skywald Publications’ black-and-white horror magazine Nightmare #20 (August 1974).

This particular Silver Surfer Pin-Up was drawn in 1974, one year before he joined Marvel Comics (June 1975), and was published in the fanzine CPL #11 page 14 (Contemporary Pictorial Literature). It shows how both lines and curves can be used to dramatically show motion combined with direction.

This is an amazing page from a one-of-a-kind artist.
