This is the original painting published as the cover to the vintage Gothic paperback novel The Third Spectre by Dan Ross in 1971. It was later reused as the cover to another vintage Gothic paperback novel entitled Moorsend Manor by Florence Hurd in 1973. In order to make it seem as if they had commissioned a 'new' painting, the publisher simply blacked out the spooky old woman in the veil.
