Description
The Blazing Skull Mystic Comics #5 – 9 (March 1941- May 1942)
The Blazing Skull of the Golden Age was a somewhat different character from his modern incarnation. Back in the 1940's it was never really clear if the Blazing Skull had any supernatural powers or not.
Having been allowed to share in the secrets of a hidden race of Tibetan Skull men, reporter Mark Todd, used this ancient knowledge to battle forces of evil as the Blazing Skull. That is about as much as can be said with any certainty about the character, since the limits of his abilities, as well as his costume, seemed to change with each subsequent appearance. He seemed to have superior strength, but maybe not. His skull really seemed to be ablaze, but other times it was only a rubber mask. And we never did actually find out just what those secrets were that the Tibetan Skull Men had shared with him. After being tortured by Hitler himself in Mystic Comics # 5 and single-handedly rescuing a captured Winston Churchill from occupied France in issue 6, the Blazing Skull returned to Manhattan, became a District Attorney, and pursued home grown psychopaths and mass murderers for the remainder of his run.
His first appearance was credited only to "Mister X" and all subsequent stories were unsigned.
