Description
The Witness
Mystic Comics #7 – 9 (December 1941 – May 1942)

At first glance the Witness appeared to be nothing more than another run of the mill costumed adventurer. He had the requisite mask and cape, was strong, and athletic, but had no super powers. What he did have was a particularly odd twist, one that was never explained in the series. Even if he came upon criminals in the act of committing a crime, let's say a robbery in progress, the Witness wouldn't act until after the thieves had finished looting the store and were making their getaway. It did seem as if he was actually cursed to witness a crime before he could do anything about it. Once he did spring into action though, watch out, he was absolutely merciless in dishing out retribution.

By his third and final adventure, the Witness had abandoned his costume for a blue business suit and a fedora pulled down so that his upper face was always hidden in shadow.

The first two adventures are by the same artist, however the only credit in the entire run is in issue 8, where the story is attributed to "s.t. anley".

And of course the Witness is one of the heroes featured in "The Twelve" limited series where he's returned to wearing his costume. Excellent work by Frenz.
