DescriptionThis wonderfully hand-illustrated postcard is postmarked May 4, 1909, and features a ink and ink wash self-portrait of Ewer. Ewer has depicted himself dressed as Sherlock Holmes, carrying a carpet bag, in anticipation of his trip overseas. After being in New York city for only eight months, Ewer was being sent to Europe by Frank Munsey, a newspaper and magazine publisher. As Ewer explains to his friends, he would be traveling to London, Scotland, Paris, Berlin, and Holland, mainly to draw theater sketches, along with other work. Interestingly, by 1909, Ewer was already making $100.00 a week, no small sum in those days. Social/Sharing |
