Description
Recently I had Mike Netzer and Chris Ivy work on a four part Legion Races series. I had also intended to have a XS / Kid flash race with the Legion and Titans coming together cheering them on.

The wonderful thing about the Superman & Flash races was there was so many covers. to choose from. While browsing the back issue bin looking for possible race covers, I came across Action Comics Issue 277 which featured Krypto the Super Dog and Streaky the Super Cat in a tug of war.( image below )

That set me to thinking, Sreaky and Krypto were both members of the Legion of Super Pets , but there never was a Super Pets race throughout the Silver Age. This was an error that had to be rectifed . So we wanted a race where they would be cheered on by the Superboy and Supergirl and of course by members of the Silver Age Legion. The cover of Issue 199 of Worlds Finest Comics was just made for it. (image below )

Mike Netzer took the excited and disappointed kids from the original cover and made it shine with really youthful members of the Substitute Legion. Their facial expressions are fantastic. An inside joke was that Color Kid looked a little like Eddie Munster. The wink that Streaky gave crossing the line was a nod and tip of the hat by Mike to an earlier commission by Val Semieks which he had enjoyed, that had featured the Supercat, (the link below will take you to it )

Chris Ivy did a deceptively simple logo and also an ink & wash to keep the clean innocence of Silver Age art...

This was a side journey that we did in the Legion Races series and Kid Flash & XS will still have their day but in the meantime enjoy Legion Races : Super-Pets Style !!

This piece reall makes me smile--from the logo to Streaky's wink, and everything in between, this is pure magic!

Thank You. That is exactly the reaction we were hoping for..this one was meant to be FUN FUN FUN. I am just amazed that nobody at DC ever thought of doing a race...

Shannon Weathers leads the Super pets charge on CAF and does great work but I am determined to give them my fair share of love and respect in the Re-Legion series....and the Subs were just icing on the cake !

You're welcome. I don't always have time to check out the cool art folks link to, but special commissions always attract my attention. Usually I have even less time to comment, but some pieces are just too sweet for me to stay silent.

I have enjoyed your comments along different threads on the comicart-l. This Re-Legion project has taken on a life of its own, far beyond anything I ever imagined but it seems to have struck a chord with people...
