When I was about eight years old, I discovered Rom: Spaceknight. The villains of the series, the Dire Wraiths, really creeped me out. Those grotesque, brain-eating, shape-shifting, sorcery-wielding alien invaders were just totally unsettling. I became a big fan of Rom, and over the years collected the entire run of the series.

In 2009, David Gallaher & Steve Ellis did the Darkstar & the Winter Guard miniseries, where they brought back the Dire Wraiths. Steve really drew a horrific depiction of the Wraiths, which led me to ask him to draw this sketch in my villains book.
