David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, Classics Illustrated No. 48 (Gilberton, June 1948). Henry C. Kiefer was clearly at his best when working on Victorian-era stories charged with atmosphere. Of the five novels by Charles Dickens adapted for Classics Illustrated, three - "Great Expectations", "David Copperfield" and "A Christmas Carol" - were drawn by Kiefer. "The 3 David Copperfield pages in this gallery are true gems that were prepared for the newspaper edition; they appeared in the fourth and final installment of the story, which was published on Sunday, 15 June 1947. The line drawing cover for No. 48 was originally the color insert's front page for the same date, with the circle portrait of the protagonist pasted over the illustration of Ham and Steerforth. The novel, which was closest to Dickens's heart as it reflected much of his early experience, is a good -- if rather longish -- read".
