I’ve always loved the Stern/Byrne/Rubenstein run on Captain America. I still read the trade from time to time. I don’t recall why the run ended so abruptly, but I think that team could have kept going for a long, long time. I know that (with some exceptions) these days, 8 issues is long run, but those guys were just beginning to hit their stride. Prior to that, Cap had a rough few years with rotating group of teams, no consistency, no focus in growing the character, and the book had really slipped. Anyway, I’ve been looking for the right piece from this run for a while and with two covers in the auction, I knew I was being given a signal to bid! This is the cover to #253, beginning the Baron Blood arc. This is one of my favorite covers from this team, and I’m really, really happy to have this memory in my hands.

So many great aspects to this cover - but none as good as the very simple Byrne take on Cap!

The most original (and my favorite) cover of the Byrne run. It was totally logical due to the story but to mix the codes of horror comics on a Cap cover was pure genius. Sincere congrats my friend !

I agree with you that this run was too short but oh so sweet. The combination of Byrne and Rubenstein was a perfect match for this title and Rubenstein's soft inks nicely complemented the feel of Byrne's oh so fluid pencils during this time period. For a brief run, Stern's scripts are still memorable to this day. I can still picture Captain America in my mind's eye convincing the people that he would not be the right person for president. If only any real-life politicians were so thoughtful, introspective and, what's that other term, . . .honest. Congratulations my friend, your collection is beginning to resemble the night sky, filled with bright stars ;)

This cover has suspense, drama, interesting lighting and POV, fine yet uncluttered detailing… today's comic book artists could learn a thing or two studying this one,

This cover was supposed to be a regular ink job but I wanted the covers for this series to look different than the others being produced at the time so I decided to make it a wash job and then have it shot with that " steel etching" filter to give it a Gothic look. When the stat came back to Marvel's offices it didn't look that good so I sat there with a single edge razor blade and proceeded to reinforce the scratches .I imagine it would be a lot easier and faster today with Photoshop.

The wash effect is totally cool. You see it more often now, but back then, this was cutting edge. The cover rocks! Thanks Joe.

Congrads Ron! Epic pick up, I truly envy you! Joe & John did a spectacular job on this cover. It's too bad they couldn't had stayed on this book atleast 5 years. I would had loved to seen them bring Bucky back then too. It would had been interesting to see how they would had done it. Those 8 issues were the best of that era.
