Description

Curtis Doyle was a young man who happened upon a ring that was forged from a cosmic cube piece and meant to be given to the Iron Man villain the Mandarin. Using the ring he became Freedom Ring and also happened to be at the time (July 2006) Marvel's newest gay superhero. Marvel even went on to tout him as a shining example of their companies diversity. Only problem? Just four months later Curtis was killed off. This caused a great uproar. The writer had not purposely gone out to continue the trend of homosexual characters dying off but had wanted to combine two character idea's: a character who simply was destined to not be fit to be a hero like so many of Marvel's heroes and the second, to create a new character who happened to be gay but without that as a defining characteristic. His mentor a heroic Skrull codenamed Crusader later acquired Curtis's ring.

I myself have taken a liking to Curtis he was a genuinely fun character which are few and far apart nowadays. Some have likened him to Kyle Rayner a new hero given great power and control over a ring that follows your will. I do hope he makes a comeback somehow in the future. His design and difference uses of his ring made him for a fun character.
