George Clark - The Neighbors - 1944 - Getting Mother on the Bus

This is one of my favorite Clark panels. Dated December 12, 1944, we see a factory in the background, as a family pushes their mother into a crowded bus. The son exclaims, "We can catch the next bus. But we've got to get mom home to start dinner!"

The drawing in this piece is just perfect, with lovely thick and thin brush lines, supported by Clark's wonderful use of the litho crayon for shading. Compositionally, it's a pretty straight-forward piece, but there's something about the weigh of the bus that I enjoy. Then there's the figure work and the action of pushing momma into the bus. Just great stuff.
