Al Columbia's tribute to Egon Schiele's Squatting couple/ The Family.

Egon Schiele; The Family:
Egon Schiele painted this piece in 1918, the year he died of the spanish flu.
Although unfinished, it has still endured one important change: in earlier versions, a bouquet of flowers stood in the place of the child, probably added when he learnt that his wife Edith was pregnant.

Edith was six months pregnant when she died of the spanish flu (Schiele died only three days after his wife, he was 28 years old).

Although the male figure is instantly recognisable as Schiele, the woman is not his wife, making the change of the flowers for a baby rather strange. Originally known as Squatting Couple, it was renamed The Family after the artist’s death

..not sure but maybe the right part (where the baby is), could also be based upon Egon Schiele's Dead Mother (1910) work ..I will ask Al Columbia some day....


..I am very happy with this piece.
The story around the original piece is beautiful intergrated in this bizarre beauty.
Love the way it still has the original Schiele-vibe, mixed with some Al-madness :)
