Winsor McCay Little Nemo

When William Randolph Hearst persuaded Winsor McCay to leave The New York Herald to join Hearst's New York American, McCay brought with him his greatest creation changing the name from Little Nemo In Slumberland to the Land Of Wonderful Dreams.

The New York Herald was universally acknowledged as having the finest color printing department in the industry located within the building. McCay used this to his advantage by using color as an integral part of his work. However, when he left the Herald for the American, it became necessary for him to take a more active role in directing the color process and thus hand colored portions of only two or three known originals as a guide.

We have had the privilege of representing the McCay family over a number of years, handling numerous examples. We have a few exemplary pieces in our own collection, this is one of my favorites.
