Smaug and Bilbo in a re-imagining of their encounter from Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Those who know me know I historically collected for nostalgia. The paintings I had were very specifically books I've read, games I've loved, etc. Never commissioned anything or even bought a painting purely because I "liked it".

Then along comes Raoul Vitale, I've been seeing his work pop up here and there - and he kills it for me every time. Greg O's Treebeard was the nail in the coffin... I knew it was time to see how the ol' Commission process worked...this was my first one, and won't be my last!

i wonder if this was used to influence the 2013 Hobbit movie...it's a wonderful piece, and it looks just like it.

One thing is for sure: I am glad it was painted BEFORE the movie so the reverse couldn't be said - nobody can legitimately make the claim that this image was based on the movie ;-)

One of my favorite sequences from the whole saga, so I just love this impressive painting! The pencil rough alone is a little gem... Congrats!

That impending flame is simply mesmerizing. Draws the eye right into the painting, then leads it right to Bilbo. Splendid piece!
