I finally picked up a page from the first volume of the Dark Tower series, in which Jae Lee started doing his "pencils only" style. As much as I love inks and prefer an inked page, Jae's pencils are so tight and amazing, that you can't help but love it anyway:) But Jae is one of my favorite artists from the '90s and he has grown so much since then. The fact that he drew the Dark Tower stories was gravy for me, as that is one of my favorite book series as well.
I've been dying to get a page from this particular run because it is the origin of Roland Deschain and this series showed you the how, what, and why he becomes who he does. And this page, where Roland speaks with his father for the first time since becoming a man & Gunslinger. (at the tender age of 14 he bested his teacher in combat to become a full Gunslinger and got himself a woman for the night to celebrate:) He is awakened by his father, who at first is angry and then apologetic when he understands Roland's reasons. They have this moment that ultimately leads to the decision to send Roland away on a mission to get him out of the way and out of danger. Powerful stuff, and a great moment for father and son.

Because Jae's pencils scan pretty light, I have darkened the main image above but I am also including the unaltered scan as well below with the published image. Enjoy!

Congratulations!! Such a defining moment in Roland's life and Jae Lee's pencils are outstanding. Very glad to see this in a deserving home. :) *now, even though I've read the novels, I guess I better pick up the tpb.*

Oh man, nostalgia blast. Grew up reading the novels (Wizard and Glass was my fave), and then when I learned Jae drew the comic... made a beeline for the TPB.
