Description

After Wally Wood left Marvel in 1965 after redesigning Daredevil’s costume and making the title a resounding success, he of course joined Tower Comics where he then made The T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents a smash hit title as well. As the urban legend goes, both Marvel & Tower were in discussions to team-up Wally Wood’s master creations of Daredevil & Dynamo for the 1st dual comic book company partnership title. Since it was Wally Wood’s legendary talent that revolutionized Daredevil and created the rising star superhero of Dynamo, he was commissioned to illustrate a fully complete concept cover featuring these two comic book titans in the heat of battle. Well, no sooner did these discussions start when they unfortunately abruptly ended. By the time this had occurred though, Woody had already completed his cover concept assignment for Marvel & Tower featuring Daredevil & Dynamo. While Woody simply held possession of this unique cover concept that he thought would never see print, some three years later G. B. Love’s “The Rocket’s Blast – ComiCollector” fanzine would approach Woody to feature this unseen treasure on their cover to Issue #56 during the Winter of 1968. (6/17/27 to 11/2/81)

I'm surprised that Wood let DD have the upper hand here. One year later the roles would probably have been reversed, when Wood left Marvel in disgust.

This is why I check out CAF regularly, a great piece that I would never see anywhere else. What a super example of Woods' "freeze frame" style. Thanks for posting.

I can't believe this awesome image has gotten so few posts! Wow! The layout of the piece and the ink work is simply amazing. Is there a way I can get a larger scan?

I'm not so sure of that urban legend. Even if there were discussions along that line, I'm not sure how serious they were. I believe the first school of thought on this piece was that Wood concocted it to illustrate Tower's heroes biting the dust, and likewise show Marvel's continuing ascension. That seems the more pragmatic history and background. It would be interesting to know if Wally just drew this cover for kicks, or if it were produced specifically for fanzine reproduction (or specifically for the RBCC). I believe the original was drawn actual size as the RBCC cover repro? Regardless, a GREAT piece, and congratulations!

Woody was making a point in this cover for sure -- and, his illustration skills are amply demonstrated.
