Description
What might have been. An unused page from X-men 138 baed on an issue 137 where Jean lives and has a psychic lobotomy. Here in 13i8, powerless, she leaves the X-men. Legend has it that Jim Shooter felt that Phoenix had to die for her crimes, and so she did. And 138 had to be redrawn as well.

Got this from Tim Townsend many, many, many years ago. Thanks Tim!

Wow! Byrnes work here is brilliant . Wonder how different the stories that followed would have been had Jean lived.

Oh, hell this is nice. I remember this well from the Art of John Byrne or one of the X-Men Companion books. Beautiful, beautiful stuff.

Because of UXM 137, Cyclops became my favorite comics character. But without editorial changes, if this page had been the "real" story, Wolverine would have probably become my fave. Thanks for sharing such a great page !

One of the hardest things I've ever let go of. Love it, miss it. If it had to go, I'm glad it was to you.

Just....incredible to see his pencils. Everything is working in this page, love it from the first till (especially) the last panel!

I don't know what's more magical, the fact that you got an un-inked page from an inker, or that this page still exists. Seeing Byrne's pristinely preserved pencils in his prime reminds me of those halcyon days where my biggest worry in life was saying Make Mine Marvel! Congrats on an Extremely Excellent Example -- Excelsior!

Beautiful piece of art and history. I think there is no other road chosen at a crossroads that has had more influence on Marvel that the death of Jean Grey in Uncanny X-Men 137. Thanks for sharing and acting as custodian to this wonderful page

Wow this is great, Since this is page 18 I wonder if the other unused pages (1-17) of issue 138 exist?

Glad I finally found this piece of history - pure pencils, cool....it doesn't look like typical 10 x 15"...any story there?
