Byrnes, Gene
I've long been a sucker for Gene Byrnes' sweet kid strip, Reg'lar Fellers. Everything from Byrnes' delicate and active line, to the endless clouds of dust kicked up by the kids antics, brings a smile to my face. The New Yawk lingo doesn't hurt either! Byrnes (1889-1974) started Reg'lar Fellers, as we know it, in 1917. It was originally distributed by the George Matthew Adams Service until 1922, when the Bell Syndicate took over. The comic strip had a healthy tenure, running until 1949. Byrnes' hand in the strip appears to have ended rather early, even though he signed his name to it for the duration. Byrnes employed ghost artists very early on in the daily strip, which is why I try and stick to the early and mid-1920s for the daily art.
