When I was a child, my father brought the family to air shows to walk around parked aircraft and see the USAF Thunderbirds fly. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, we went to see the aircraft carriers at the Alameda Naval Air Station. I've visited over ten carriers here where Eugene Ely flew an airplane onto a ship for the first time in 1911. As a youngster in school, we could often look up to see Douglas A-4 Skyhawks from Alameda NAS and Lockheed P-3 Orions from Moffett Field NAS. As an adult, I was working in San Francisco when the USN Blue Angels arrived a day early for Fleet Week. Walking out of a restaurant, I saw small blue planes flashing past. That was an exciting afternoon. During another Fleet Week, I was able to board the USS Henry Jackson and walked into the compartment with 24 Trident missile tubes. Over the years, I've seen Canada's Snowbirds, Italy's Frecce Trecolori, the RAF Red Arrows, and the Patrouille de France.
I love Harvey Kurtzman's Frontline Combat and Two-Fisted Tales, Archie Goodwin's Blazing Combat, and Sam Glanzman's A Sailor's Story books. I've read a great deal of history, concentrating on the Pacific naval battles of WWII, the sailing ship battles of the War of 1812 and Napoleonic Wars. I love the fictional naval adventures by CS Forester, Dudley Pope, and Rafael Sabatini.
The late Paul Allen's R/V Petrel searches for lost warships. They have found the USS Lexington CV-2, the USS Hornet CV-8, the USS Indianapolis CA-35, and other warships from World War II. The PBS documentary The USS Indianapolis: The Final Chapter covered one of these expeditions.
