John was a throwback to artists like Hal Foster and Alex Raymond, both talents he admired and consciously/unconsciously imitated. His talent with the human figure in motion are legendary. And, especially in his earlier works, his use and ability to draw hands, and tortured figures lead to his likening with some of the old masters of art, especially Michelangelo. In Conan he found his immortality.
