One of the most influential comic books of its era, American Flagg introduced Reuben Flagg and his hyper-corporatized dystopian future. American Flagg was one of the early 1980s titles that began to establish independent comic book publishers as a force to be reckoned with in the then new world of the Direct Sales market of comic book specialty shops.
Chaykin was hitting on all cylinders with this series, which was a couple of decades ahead of its time. American Flagg brought a maturity to mainstream comics with its complex characters, raw sexuality and hyper-violence. Taking place nearly 50 years in the future in the year 2031 (or just six years from now), it predicted the rise of reality television, the proliferation of pornography, the use of CGI, enhanced sports, the fall of the Soviet Union and more.
