The motif of a snake biting a rather personal part of a man’s anatomy goes back to none other than Michelangelo. When his monumental fresco The Last Judgment was unveiled on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in 1541, a cardinal complained about the abundance of nude figures, arguing that they were more appropriate for a tavern than for a papal chapel. Michelangelo took his revenge by giving one of the figures the cardinal’s features, adding donkey’s ears, and making sure that a snake took a hearty bite at his genitals. Anyone wishing to see images should search for: Michelangelo – Sistine Chapel – Minos.
