comic strips
well, well, well... i never thought i'd start buying comic strips, but such things happen... i began with an interest in the fact that kirby's heroes were caniff, foster and raymond, and thought it would be nice to have those 3 in the collection alongside the kirbys i have... fortunately, i managed to score a caniff daily (with a character holding a record!)... and after that i was lucky enough to find a raymond rip kirby that i could somewhat afford... but i'm still looking for a foster.
as usual, in the midst of a focused search i began to stray... finding a few howard the duck strips (which i read as a kid) and slowly starting to respond to the haiku nature of story telling in a strip, as opposed to the sonnet-like story telling in the comic book page.
as i started looking at older strips - little orphan annie, gasoline alley, etc. i remembered seeing most of these in one of my favorite books as a kid: bill blackbeard's smithsonian collection of newspaper comics, which i spent hours looking at the pictures and trying to copy some of the images (poorly!).
as i started looking for strips i knew, i also discovered the great work of frank godwin, dick calkins, and jose luis salinas, all of whom i'd never heard of, and as my interest grew deeper it didn't hurt to discover that even guys like wayne boring, joe kubert, neal adams - and even jack kirby - did strips too...
