Pixar Animation Studio is located in Emeryville, across the bay from San Francisco. My first visit to the studio was a Cartoon Art Museum Night at Pixar. Another chance came with the Totoro Forest Project auction. The Oakland Museum of California was the site for PIXAR: 25 Years of Animation, the culmination of a would tour which began at New York's Museum of Modern Art with only 20 years of work to cover. The Computer History Museum presented Pixar - A Human Story of Computer Animation with Ed Catmull, Alvy Ray Smith, Andrew Stanton, and Brad Bird.
Toy Story director John Lasseter appeared at a Spike & Mike's Festival of Animation screening in San Francisco. He answered questions before going to the lobby to sign autographs. The line hardly moved at all and I wondered about the delay. Soon, a young girl walked by with a Festival poster and I saw a full-length Woody drawing on the back. The director drew for everybody in line. I've also met directors Brad Bird, Pete Docter, and Andrew Stanton at bay area events. Before the deluge of media fans at SDCC, I was able to see Brad Bird's The Incredibles and Pete Docter's Up panels.
Pixar story artists (and eventual short film directors) Ronnie del Carmen (Dug's Special Mission) and Enrico Casarosa (La Luna) came to exhibit their personal projects at SDCC 2002. I first saw Ronnie's art in the Dark Horse Aliens: Mondo Heat one-shot comic book. He was the first one I sought out when the con opened to the public. Enrico's Adventures of Mia comic book was a delightful work, too. Other Pixar artists setting up at cons include Bill Presing, Scott Morse, Jeff Pidgeon, Ted Mathot, and freelancer Jamie Baker. The Alameda County Library offers some of their books including Enrico's Venice Chronicles, Ted's Rose and Isabel, and Bill's Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher.
Scott, Ted, and puppeteer Anita Coulter created the TR!CKSTER pop-up event concurrent with SDCC and now operate a TR!CKSTER store on Ashby Avenue in Berkeley, CA.
