Japanese anime and manga characters
In the 1980's, I began to read the English-language adaptations of Japanese manga: Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa, Masamune Shirow's Appleseed, Kenichi Sonoda's Gunsmith Cats, and other action, adventure, and science fiction manga being translated for the American comic market. As the manga market in the US expanded, I picked up some humor and comedy titles like Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma 1/2 and Kosuke Fujishima's Oh My Goddess!. In the last decade, I've greatly enjoyed Osamu Tezuka's medical mystery man Black Jack from Vertical, Mitsuru Adachi's Cross Game baseball story from Viz, Shigeru Mizuki's supernatural stories Kitaro and Nononoba and his historical works Onwards Towards Our Noble Deaths and Showa from Drawn & Quarterly.
In the early years of translated comics, many American publishers sought out local artists to do covers for the American editions and do publicity pieces. My first purchases were cover prelims by Arthur Adams. It was evident he did quite a bit of work before doing his painted Appleseed covers.
